The pool is on the site of the Lightmoor colliery and was used as a firing range during the war. The main colliery site is now occupied by a timber company however the old winding house is still visible as can be seen from the picture. Lightmoor consists of two pools surrounded by the coal spoil from the years over which mining operations were carried out at the colliery. Only the main pool is fished and the club have ongoing improvement work at this venue putting in comfortable pegs and upgrading the path. There is in the region of 30 comfortable pegs with the area around the island being an obvious feature which is targeted but as in most waters its difficult to prevent the fish ‘crawling’ over the island when hooked. The pool received an additional stocking with Gudgeon, Roach to 3/4 lb and Barbel from the fish rescue carried out by the club at Wigpool Severn Trent’s water treatment works on March 13th 2007. The received a further stocking of F1 Hybrids, as well as Idethe water also contains Tench, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Gudgeon, Eels and as well as the odd Chub. Occaisonally a barbel is caught. Although the pool is well stocked and used in matches it can be fickle if 20 or more people are on the lake at the same time. That said in matches winning weights in summer are in the region 20 - 40lbs. A rule introduced in 2006 during pleasure sessions is that keepnets must be emptied of carp at 1 o clock to avoid stress. In matches the fish are not retained any longer than five hours. January 28th 2007 saw the match record smashed by Dennis Sherwood with a weight of 112lbs 12ozs! Total weight of fish caught in the match was over 260lbs, why pay commercial fishery prices? As if this wasn’t good enough February 18th saw the Woolworth cup rearranged at Lightmoor the weights were again amazing with over 240lbs of fish caught. 1st was Nik Oakley with 70lbs of Carp, second was Dennis the menace Sherwood with 54lbs 9ozs and third Nigel Phillips with 52lbs 12ozs. These weights are along commercial fishery lines and all for the price of a Forest club card. This pool is ideal for beginners who want to catch a big fish (carp to 10 lbs are big fish to a beginner). In 1981 the club built several disabled pegs as its contribution to the year of the disabled. These need updating and the club hopes to commence a rebuiding programme.
Lightmoor is used for most of the junior matches that are run by the club throughout the summer months. The junior match secretary is John Beddis who runs the regular Saturday matches throughout the year. John is a qualifed Professional Angling coach www.daceangling.co.uk and is therefore CRB checked and has undertaken a first aid course. The juniors therefore not only get to compete against each other on a friendly basis but also benefit from free on the spot coaching! . The final fishing competition match each year is the traditional Christmas match. The juniors compete for tackle prizes as well as the usual financial rewards. This years as well as individual donations local tackle shops Forest Tackle of Lydney and Wye Angling of Ross donated tackle to enable each of the participants to receive a prize.. 2009 has seen further work on the lake surroundings with new pegs and improvements to the path around the lake. Look at the picture gallery to see how it now looks. As well as the improvements to the main lake at Lightmoor new platforms for juniors and beginners especially have been placed on the small pond which has a plentiful stock of small roach and rudd in addition to some carp and tench ideal for people just starting on the fishing trail who also need someone to sit with them to provide additional help and advice.
