Places & PeopleOn 28th October 2010 Ian Didcote was presented with the Drennan Cup and a cheque for £5000 by Ian Barclay of Drennan International of Oxford who sponsored the competition. Ian won one of anglings most prestigious knockout competitions today at Docklow pools. He received a trophy along with a cheque for £5000. This is a knockout competition fished by invitation only to 100 of the countrys top anglers, the matches started in May this year and took place over 7 venues total sponsored prize money for the event this year was £8500. Ian of Tewkesbury and Roly McEneaney made it to the final two day fish off to be determined by overall weight on two different venues. The journey took both of them through 7 knockout rounds fished throughout the country. Ian made it to the Final last year only to be beaten by fellow Garbolino consultant Simon Fry at the final round after beating him on weight on the river Wye at Hereford . This year Ian beat Roly by 3lbs 6ozs on Wednesday at Hereford and took this weight advantage into Thursday’s final round at Docklow Pools near Leominster along with his travelling support from Tewkesbury, Gloucester and Cirencester. Weights were not huge by commercial fishery standards but it provided a test of each angler’s skill in attracting and holding the fish. Ian was always ahead over the five hour match but not by a great margin which can be easily overtaken should the Carp arrive in the opponents peg as happened to Ian last year. The match ended on a nail biting moment as Roly caught a large Carp with 2 minutes to the final whistle. This took him five minutes to subdue and net to a great cheer from his supporters, it proved too little too late as Ian weighed 60lbs of Carp and silver fish to Roly’s 53lbs 5 ozs giving Ian an overall weight on the two days of 72lbs 8 ozs to Roly’s 62lbs 7ozs.
Ian went on to win the Stafford Moor Sivermaniac title less than two weeks later on the 7th November proving his all round abilities and dedication. Ian proved his worth by making the decision to fish for skimmers from the off, he was pegged next to Des Shipp who decided that Roach were the key, however as Ian forged ahead realising his mistake it became a game of catchup that he was never going to win. Ian won the match with 48lbs 7ozs of silver fish beating England International Des Shipp by 12lbs.
