As he left the funeral of Richard Bryant at Oakridge on the 25th April Tewkesbury angler Ian Didcote pledged to do his best and win the Milo White Acres Festival in his memory. Some of you reading this will know Richard from all of the work he has done over the years with the Peatmoor Cadet, Junior and Intermediate anglers. He spent a lot of his time and money helping the young anglers. He would work all day and in the evening jump into his car or a hired minibus to transport the team to places all over the country, Warrington, Boston etc. to fish the Nationals. He would then spend hours often til after midnight mixing groundbait for the young anglers to use the next day, my wife has an abiding memory of him bending over the mixing bowls in the car park of the hotel we stayed at in Boston with an everpresent cigarette dripping ash into the bowls, when she remarked upon this to him he gave a mischevious grin and said it was his secret ingredient and not to divulge it to the other teams. Where he found the time to run a successful timber business, be a Governor of Oakridge school and sit on the Parish Council as well as the time he spent in preparation for all of the juniors and his sons (this means plural sons!!!!) fishing kit I shall never know. I know my daughter misses him as do my wife and I, the John Telling memorial matches will never be the same.
Richard had helped guide Ian’s talent from junior matches on the local and National scene which saw Ian competing in local and National matches until he became a regular squad member of local Boss Phoenix team based in Stonehouse before being recommended for the all conquering Essex County by Cirencester based Kim Milsom. When Essex folded Ian was snapped up by Daiwa Dorking and he now competes on the national scene travelling all over the counrty with the help of his sponsors Garbolino and Van Den Eynde groundbaits. Ian made the long journey from Gloucestershire to White Acres after the funeral to spend the ne, xt 5 days competing against England Internationals for one of the countrys top cash prizes for anglers. 180 of the top anglers would battle it out in the Milo 2008 festival held over the complex’s lakes and Porth Reservoir.
Day one Ian drew Pollawyn Lake and fished pellet wagglerfor 2nd place and 9 points with a weight of 134lbs 2ozs, 6th overall
Day two Ian drew Twin Oaks and blew the opposition away with a stunning 175lbs 11ozs of Carp on meat at 5 metres. Top of teh leader board and over 80lbs ahead of his nearest rival.
Day three Ian drew Gwinear and repeated his previous days sucess with top weight of 100lbs 2 ozs for his third section win giving him a free holiday at White Acres in October.
Day four Porth reservoir with a poor draw he was only able to manage 5th with a weight of 4lbs 6 ozs he slipped to second overall although still ahead on weight.
As with the end of the football season it all came down to the final day with Ian needing to beat England Internationals Alan Scotthorne and Will Raison. Day five meant he was on Bolingey with a weight of 98lbs 9 ozs he won the section as well as the Festival taking his total weight for the week to 514lbs. Next stop England?
October 2009 The Drennan Match Fishing Final first leg at Belmont on the Wye was won by Ian fishing 9 metres to hand on the Pole with 37lbs of Dace and Roach only interupted in the flow of catching by a Pike, Simon had 26lbs, roll on Docklow.
